Do you want a good picture of your overall health? I have been using the following scaling method in my counseling for the last two years and it has been working out very well. I ask the client to rate themselves on a scale of 1-10 in four different areas of life. 1 is the worst off ever, and 10 is the best off ever they can imagine.
If you want, try it out! The first area is Physical Health only. How do you feel physically? Are you where you want to be goal-wise, etc. Remember your numbers. The second area is your Emotional Health. How do you manage on a day-by-day basis emotionally? The third area is your Social Health. By this I mean your relationships, your support network. Do you feel supported? The final area is your Spiritual Health. This can mean something different to different people. It may be a hard one to judge, but how do you feel you are doing spiritually vs. where you would like to be?
Now… add up your numbers, multiply by 10, and divide by 4 to get an overall average. This is your overall health score. I believe that the four areas (physical, emotional, social, spiritual) make up the complete person. Now, where does your overall health score fall…
100-86 = Excellent
85-71 = Good
70-51 = Fair
50-36 = Poor
35-11 = Dangerous (needs medication)
10-0 = immediate Hospitalization
Now, set goals and make plans to achieve those goals. Do this exercise again in a month or in two months or six months or a year to track your progress.
