Meeting Celebrities!

This past weekend I got a chance to meet, what I consider, two of the top people on my favorite celebrities list.  Now, let me clarify.  I don’t consider celebrities as people I wish I were or because they are famous or rich.  I consider celebrities as people who I admire for their contributions to my story.

People I consider celebrities are those like Ron Luce (TeenMania & Acquire the Fire), Louie Giglio (Passion), David Barton (WallBuilders), Alex Kendrick (Sherwood Pictures – Fireproof/Courageous), Toby McKeehan (dc Talk / tobyMac), Peter Furler (newsboys), and Michael W. Smith.

So, this past weekend I got the opportunity to meet and interact with two people who are tops of that list right now:  Kirk Cameron (Growing Pains, Way of the Master, Fireproof, Monumental), and Ken Ham (CEO/founder of Answers in Genesis, Creation Museum, and Ark Encounter).

On Sunday April 15th my wife and I attended the Indianapolis stop of the “Love Worth Fighting For” marriage conference with Kirk Cameron and musical guest Warren Barfield.  We had VIP tickets which allowed us into an exclusive Q&A and autograph session with Kirk.  During the Q&A Kirk responded to the recent outrage over his comments on the CNN Piers Morgan show about homosexuality.  Kirk said “when you’re given a four second sound bite on an issue that we could barely scratch the surface on after 20 minutes is unfair.”

The actual marriage conference could be boiled down to three points:

  1. “The heart of the matter is the matter of the heart”  –  accepting Christ as Lord of your life.
  2. “Stop trying to get a new spouse, give your spouse a new you”  –  the only person you can change is yourself.
  3. “Never give up the battle”  –  spiritual warfare against sin never ends

Here is a pic I took of Kirk at the conference:

Kirk is also featured as the face of Christianity on the popular site reddit.com.  He is used to pick on Christians through the popular “Scumbag Christian” meme.  Here’s an example I think is actually quite telling of Christianity today:

On Monday April 16th my family and I attended an Answers in Genesis conference with Kalamazoo, Michigan that featured Ken Ham and PhD geologist Andrew Snelling.  Over three sessions I got the pleasure of hearing Ken address children, teens, and adults for over four hours collectively.  Dr. Snelling ended the day with a technical talk on flood geology.

   Here are the talks:
9:00 a.m.  Ken Ham – Dinosaurs for Kids (Grades K-6)
11:00 a.m.  Ken Ham – Defending the Christian Faith Biblically & Scientifically (Grades 7-12)
6:00 p.m.  Ken Ham – How to Reach the Secularized World with the Gospel
7:30 p.m.  Dr. Andrew Snelling – Geology Confirms the Scripture

Ken’s talks were amazing.  It is awesome to be in a room with thousands learning some of these truths for the first time.  The biggest thing I took away from his talks was just a firmer understanding that if we allow ANY extra-Biblical influence into the pages of the Bible it is no longer God’s word, but man’s.

Here is a picture of me with the world’s leading authority on creation/evolution, Ken Ham:

Dr. Snelling’s evening presentation was amazing.  I need to get that on DVD!  The evidences he presented for the flood all throughout the Grand Canyon was incredible.  This guy knows his stuff!  He showed that not only do we know that particular rock layers were formed by water, but we know the speed of the water.  He showed images of a critter’s footprints being sideswiped by water!  He showed how we can trace the water’s path across North America and converging on the Grand Canyon.  There are not enough words I can write here to show how eye opening his talk was.    Here’s a starting point for more info on flood geology – http://www.answersingenesis.org/get-answers/topic/geology

In conclusion, it was amazing to meet two individual (Kirk & Ken) who has so positively influenced my resolve and dedication as a Christian.  It was great to be able to encourage them and personally thank them for their example.  May God continue to rise up Godly men and women willing to stand uncompromising in the face of extreme adversity.
